[Bio]
Funnyman Adam Sandler’s polarizing antics have divided audiences and critics, who frequently dismiss his comedy style as lowbrow and obnoxious. Adam’s many films, as well as the films of his Happy Madison production company, have performed consistently well at the box office despite negative reviews from the critics.
Sandler was born in Brooklyn, New York in 1966 to a Jewish family. At five, his family moved to Manchester, New Hampshire, where he attended Manchester Central High School and found comedy taking the stage at an amateur comedy competition at age 17. While at New York University and studying for a Fine Arts Degree, Adam performed regularly in clubs. This lead to appearances on The Cosby Show as Theo Huxtable's friend, Smitty and to the MTV game show Remote Control.
After his film debut Going Overboard in 1989, Adam performed in comedy clubs and was discovered by comedian Dennis Miller, who saw Adam’s act in Los Angeles and recommended him to Saturday Night Live producer Lorne Michaels. Sandler was hired as a writer for SNL in 1990 and became a featured player the following year, making a name for himself by performing amusing original songs on the show, including "The Thanksgiving Song" and "The Chanukah Song". Sandler told Conan O'Brien on The Tonight Show that NBC fired him and Chris Farley from the show in 1995.
Sandler went on to star in many of our all time favorite funny films. Of these films, he is best known for Billy Madison (1995), Happy Gilmore (1996), The Wedding Singer (1998), The Waterboy (1998), Big Daddy (1999), and Mr. Deeds (2002).
